Artist statement

My work aims to explore issues of memory, identity, tradition and cultural hybridity in South African culture. As a young black South African who grew up in Sharpeville, Boipatong and Zone 7, places that have experienced collective violence. I view the present through the lens of a complicated, even contradictory past. This burden of history has had effects on how I look at myself as young black South African within this space of trauma.

I see the sense of displacement and confusion as an opportunity to critically examine my ethnic identity as a young black South African. I am also fascinated by the way in which identity, memory, and tradition intersect with landscape and a relationship with the land. A lot of my art work is experimental in which research is integral to the process.

Assemblage and SoMa Art + Space invite you to join them at the opening of ‘I am Mine’, an exhibition of works by a selection of artists currently engaging with Assemblage on Sunday 10 July from 12-3pm at SoMa in Maboneng.

While the process of putting together this exhibition has been swift, Assemblage has taken the opportunity to explore what it is each artist feels makes them an artist, what makes them unique, interesting, exciting, different in the context of the contemporary Johannesburg art scene.

‘I am Mine’ is a brief snippet, view, look into the mindset of artists working within the city of Johannesburg today, with curatorial input by Gontse Mathabathe and Teboho Ralesai.
